The day after wrapping up a playoff series is often prime time for front-office business — and the Edmonton Oilers followed that tradition on Friday.
Less than 24 hours after eliminating the Los Angeles Kings in the first round, the Oilers announced a two-year contract extension for defenseman Alec Regula, locking in one of their more intriguing depth pieces before the offseason ramps up.
Regula, 23, was claimed off waivers from the Boston Bruins on December 11 but spent the season recovering from an injury. He was originally placed on injured reserve before the Bruins attempted to pass him through waivers — a move that gave Edmonton the opportunity to snag the 6-foot-4 blueliner.
In a bit of full-circle irony, Regula was one of the pieces the Chicago Blackhawks sent to Boston last June in the deal that brought Taylor Hall to the Bruins — a player whose own contract extension was famously announced the day after Carolina eliminated the Devils in 2023.
This season, Regula played 55 games for the AHL’s Providence Bruins, tallying 26 points. The year prior, he split time between the NHL and AHL, suiting up in four games for Chicago and 51 with their affiliate in Rockford.
Across 22 career NHL games, Regula has recorded one goal, 21 shots, and averaged 16:54 of ice time.
Now, under his new two-year, two-way contract worth $775,000 per season, Regula will continue his development within the Oilers organization — likely starting with the Bakersfield Condors, where he’ll provide valuable depth and upside on the right side of the blue line.
