Evgeny Kuznetsov and SKA Saint Petersburg mutually terminate remaining three years of KHL contract

Evgeny Kuznetsov is once again an unrestricted free agent, and this time, it’s after a tumultuous 2024-25 campaign with SKA Saint Petersburg. The forward and the KHL club have mutually agreed to terminate the remaining three seasons of his contract, leaving Kuznetsov’s future uncertain.

The news comes just a day after SKA’s elimination from the KHL postseason by Dynamo Moscow in six games. The team’s young star, Ivan Demidov, also made a move to the NHL, signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens.

SKA released a statement wishing Kuznetsov “good luck for the future!” as they part ways. The team’s elimination and the loss of two key players will likely have a significant impact on their future prospects.

Kuznetsov expressed his disappointment with the team’s elimination, saying it’s “very hard, you don’t want to accept defeat, but unfortunately, this is reality.” He added that he wants to apologize for the situation and thanked the fans and workers, saying they “don’t deserve to see this.”

The forward’s departure from SKA Saint Petersburg marks the second-straight offseason where Kuznetsov is an unrestricted free agent. His future in the NHL or KHL remains uncertain, but it’s clear that he’s looking for a fresh start.

The 32-year-old Kuznetsov has had a storied career in the NHL, playing for the Washington Capitals and scoring a hat-trick in the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals. However, his time in the KHL has been marked by controversy and inconsistency.

As an unrestricted free agent, Kuznetsov will have many options to consider. He could return to the NHL, potentially rejoining the Capitals or signing with a new team. Alternatively, he could explore other opportunities in the KHL or European leagues.

One thing is certain: Evgeny Kuznetsov is a talented player with a proven track record of success. His next move will be closely watched by hockey fans around the world.

The departure of Kuznetsov and Demidov from SKA Saint Petersburg will likely have significant implications for the team’s future. The loss of two key players will create opportunities for younger players to step up and take on more prominent roles.

As the KHL continues to evolve and grow, teams like SKA Saint Petersburg will need to adapt and rebuild to remain competitive. The departure of Kuznetsov and Demidov serves as a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of professional hockey.

In the end, Evgeny Kuznetsov’s future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: he will be back on the ice soon, looking for a fresh start and a chance to prove himself once again.
