The Los Angeles Dodgers may have been the visiting team on Tuesday night, but their fanbase made Wrigleyville feel like home. A sea of Dodgers supporters was spotted parading through the neighborhood in full voice, proudly backing their team on the road, as captured by photographer Joshua Mellin.
But when the dust settled, it was the Chicago Cubs and their fans who had the final word.
In a rollercoaster contest that had fireworks from the very first inning, the Cubs mounted a dramatic comeback to steal an 11-10 win in extra innings. After coughing up a five-run seventh inning that saw the Dodgers surge ahead 10-7, Chicago refused to fold. Kyle Tucker cut the deficit to 10-9 with a two-run blast in the eighth inning—continuing his red-hot start to the season. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, Miguel Amaya sent Wrigley Field into a frenzy with a game-tying homer off Dodgers closer Tanner Scott.
The Cubs kept the momentum rolling in the 10th, holding L.A. scoreless before sealing the victory on a clutch Ian Happ single, completing one of the wildest finishes of the season so far.
The back-and-forth affair was electric from the outset. Tommy Edman wasted no time getting the Dodgers on the board, launching a three-run shot off Cubs starter Shota Imanaga in the top of the first. Edman, who’s been tormenting Cubs pitchers all season, kept his hot streak alive.
Chicago, however, answered right back with a five-run barrage against Dodgers starter Dustin May in the bottom half of the inning. By the fifth, the Cubs led 7-4. But Will Smith trimmed the lead with a solo homer in the sixth, and the Dodgers exploded for five more runs in the seventh to reclaim the lead—sending their traveling fanbase into a frenzy.
Unfortunately for them, the Dodgers bullpen faltered. Kyle Tucker, thriving in his contract year, delivered another big blow to boost a Cubs offense that currently leads the majors in runs scored. Chicago has now plated 10 or more runs in a league-best seven games.
With the crowd at Wrigley Field roaring like it was October, the Cubs improved to 15-10, holding firm at the top of the NL Central despite a brutal early schedule. Meanwhile, the Dodgers were left reeling—not just from the loss, but from watching a near-certain win slip away in dramatic fashion.
For Cubs fans, it was a night to remember. For Dodgers fans who made the trip, it was a long walk back through Wrigleyville.
