Former NHL Goaltender and Hockey Analyst Passes Away at 67

The hockey world is mourning the loss of Greg Millen, a former NHL goaltender and longtime hockey analyst, who passed away on Monday at the age of 67. Millen’s death was announced by the NHL Alumni Association, which did not provide a cause of death.

 

Millen played 14 seasons in the NHL from 1978-92 for six different teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings. He finished his career with a 215-284-89 record, an .873 save percentage, and 3.88 goals allowed per game in 604 games played.

After his playing career, Millen transitioned to broadcasting and began covering the Ottawa Senators during their inaugural season in 1992-93. He later joined CBC’s “Hockey Night in Canada” as a color commentator in 1995 and worked for the NHL on Sportsnet.

 

Millen had an illustrious broadcasting career, covering 12 Stanley Cup Finals, 12 NHL All-Star games, three Olympic Games, and two World Cups of Hockey. He was known for his insightful analysis and charismatic personality, making him a beloved figure in the hockey world.

 

In addition to his broadcasting career, Millen also pursued higher education, earning a master’s degree in leadership from the University of Guelph in 2014. He also assisted in leadership character development for the NHL’s Seattle Kraken and various corporations. Millen taught leadership at Fleming College in nearby Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

 

The NHL Alumni Association paid tribute to Millen, saying, “It is with heavy hearts we share the sudden passing of Greg Millen today. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with Greg’s family at this very difficult time.”

 

Greg Millen’s legacy will be remembered for his contributions to the hockey world, both on and off the ice. His passion, expertise, and charisma made him a beloved figure in the sport, and his impact will be felt for years to come.

 

The passing of Greg Millen is a significant loss for the hockey community. His legacy will live on through his family, friends, and the countless people he touched throughout his career. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.
