Rigged? NBA Ref Under Fire After Wild Call in Warriors Playoff clash vs rockets

The opening matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets in the NBA playoffs has ignited more than just the usual postseason excitement. A controversial call late in the first quarter has put officiating under the spotlight, with fans and analysts alike criticizing a referee’s decision that some believe unfairly benefited the Warriors.

The incident in question involved Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun and Warriors forward Jimmy Butler. As Butler made a move near the sideline, Sengun made light contact while guarding him. Butler subsequently lost his balance and stepped out of bounds. Despite the minimal contact—seen by many as standard defensive pressure—officials assessed a foul on Sengun, ruling that it caused Butler to go out of bounds.

The call drew immediate backlash online. Many fans argued that the contact was negligible and shouldn’t have warranted a foul, especially in a high-stakes playoff game. “That’s soft [expletive] for a playoff game,” one fan posted on Reddit, while another vented, “Butler gets one of the most [expletive] whistles I’ve ever seen. Dude is such a flopper.”

Social media quickly erupted with more criticism. One user wrote, “That referee doesn’t deserve to be an NBA referee—what a [expletive] moron.” Another poster added a sentiment echoed by many Rockets fans: “Always gotta face both the Refs and the Warriors,” suggesting a perceived bias in Golden State’s favor.

The frustration is compounded by the context of the matchup. The Rockets, who finished second in the Western Conference with a 52–30 record, came into the series as the higher seed. Meanwhile, the Warriors entered the playoffs as a lower seed (48–34) after battling through the play-in tournament. Despite that, Golden State remains a popular favorite due to its deep playoff experience and star-studded roster.

For many fans, the call against Sengun reinforced a belief that the Warriors benefit from preferential officiating. “Refs gotta pay more attention. No way he fell for that,” one commenter noted. Another simply described the game as “unwatchable” in light of the questionable calls.

As the series progresses, all eyes will remain on the officiating. Whether this was a one-off blunder or part of a worrying trend, the league can expect increased scrutiny from fans, particularly if similar decisions continue to spark controversy.

The NBA has yet to release an official statement regarding the call, but the debate over fairness and consistency in officiating is sure to dominate conversations as the Playoff move forward.
